Self-Care Isn’t Selfish: Emotional Self-Care

10/12/2022

The act of nourishing and caring for your inner feelings and emotions is known as emotional self-care. Taking care of your entire self, including your emotional life, is more crucial than ever in the demanding environment we live in today. You may reduce stress, calm your nervous system, cope with difficult situations, and improve your mood by nurturing your emotions and processing any persistently negative ones.

There is an entire industry devoted to selling us products for this purpose. Bubble baths, manicures, and other pleasures might be the first things that come to mind when you think about self care. However, true self-care entails taking care of your entire being, including your emotions and inner life.
Turn Your Attention Towards Your Body
You must be conscious of your emotions in order to properly handle them. Paying attention to your body is an excellent method to do this. Take note of the bodily feelings that emotions elicit. Is there a temperature to this feeling? a surface? a form? Is it locked or unlocked? Does it make you feel energized or depleted?
Ask for Help Before You Need It
Asking for help before you need it gives the people you're asking the time to prepare and be more present when they aid you, whether you're about to need space, support, or somewhere to vent.
Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness is simply observing the present moment without passing judgment on it. Attempt to sit and breathe while experiencing your emotions. Your feelings are what they are; they are not good or terrible, right or wrong. Simply allowing your feelings to exist is a crucial component of emotional self care.
Consciously Choose How to Respond
While we have no control over what happens to us, we do have a say in how we react to those events. You have the power to take a deep breath, react with kindness to yourself and others, and discover methods to keep optimism and calm whether you're dealing with cancer, a pandemic, or a whining toddler.
Limit Exposure to News
During trying times, the CDC advises reducing the amount of news media we watch, read, or listen to. Regularly step away from the news to engage in enjoyable, healthful activities.
Stay Connected to Others
We remain resilient and emotionally healthy thanks to strong, supportive connections. Reaching out and maintaining connections are more crucial than ever during these lonely times.
Practice Gratitude
An excellent method to exercise emotional self care is to change our attention from what is going wrong to what is going well. By including appreciation in your everyday routine, you may elevate your mood and reduce stress.
Try a Meditation App
Today's market is flooded with excellent meditation apps that include timers with soothing sounds, guided meditations, and other programs. This can be a wonderful way to start your day, decompress, or drift off to sleep.
Move Your Body
It is common knowledge that exercise is good for both the body and the mind. For many people, adding exercise to therapy or taking drugs might help you feel better. You'll be far more likely to persist with a form of exercise that you enjoy doing if you enjoy it.
Laugh!
Spend time with people who will make you laugh, or just watch that humorous TV all at once. Laughter has been found to reduce stress and lift your spirits. Even the immune system is benefited by it. 7 Although it's crucial, emotional self-care doesn't have to be a serious endeavor.
Take Up a Relaxing Hobby
Are you a guitarist, knitter, or crocheter? Do you enjoy taking pictures or watching birds? What about that past-loved pastime you've given up? An excellent method to unwind and clear your mind is to concentrate on an enjoyable, peaceful activity. Now is a perfect opportunity to do anything you've always wanted to learn how to accomplish!
Both your physical and mental well-being require equal amounts of care. Consider including at least one emotional self-care exercise into your daily routine and see the difference. You deserve to take great care of yourself.
